About Winds of Yawanawá

Winds of Yawanawá is a series of 1,000 moving AI paintings made by Refik Anadol and his studio with the Yawanawá, an Indigenous people of the Brazilian Amazon. The pictures grow out of paintings by two young Yawanawá artists, the sisters Nawashahu and Mukashahu, daughters of Chief Nixiwaka Yawanawá. Each token is a one-minute video with sound. #888 opens on a yellow sun with a blue core, then breaks into a stream of small cubes that never settles. The contract credits both makers, as "Yawanawa and Refik Anadol".

The project grew from a visit to Aldeia Sagrada, the community's sacred village, in September 2022, and Impact One commissioned it for its Possible Futures program. The studio trained an AI model on the sisters' paintings. A weather station in the village recorded wind and temperature, and those readings drive the motion and show up among each token's traits. The series was unveiled at Scorpios on Mykonos on July 13, 2023, with Chiefs Nixiwaka and Isku Kua leading songs and prayers, after a pre-sale had sold out. The videos and their metadata sit on web servers, not onchain.

Anadol and Impact One gave up their share of the sales, which went to Instituto Nixiwaka for the Yawanawá villages. Brasil de Fato reported that the money paid for new buildings in the sacred village, where the fifth Indigenous Ayahuasca Conference met in January 2025. Anadol told Art Basel the funds were also going to a first museum and school. The work was shown at the opening of the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2024, and in May 2025 it won a special industry prize at the first Digital Art Awards in London. His studio later made Biome Lumina, another 1,000 living paintings, for Dataland.

What to look for

Origin

5 of 10 values

Each painting carries one of ten origins, a Yawanawá word given with its English meaning, from Ishtī, star, to Uwa, flower. Hivemind lists it with the wind and temperature readings among the data behind each picture. Ushe, moon, is the scarcest.

Wind intensity

The wind reading from the weather station at Aldeia Sagrada, the data that sets the paintings moving. The metadata sorts it into five bands, from Still to Tempestuous, and gives each painting a numeric value in a separate trait.

Particles

The shape a painting breaks into once it starts to move: cubes in most of the series, spheres in a little over a quarter of it. Hivemind reads both as the digital pigment typical of Anadol's work.

Temperature

3 of 5 values

The temperature reading from the village, another of the data streams Hivemind lists behind the series, in five bands from Freezing to Scorching. As with the wind, a numeric value sits in a second trait. Fewer than thirty paintings each are Scorching or Freezing.
