About PXL DEX

PXL DEX is a series of 256 live animations by Kim Asendorf. Each one, called a Deck, is a cube of colored points floating in black. Sixteen kinds of motion pass through it block by block, so its points ripple, drift, jump or snap back into line, and the motion never loops. A viewer can turn it, zoom and switch views. Every point is a PXL token, and the number a Deck holds sets how thick its cloud looks. In October 2026 Deck 70 held eight points and Deck 81 more than three million. Each Deck has its own palette, two pairs of colors drawn as gradients, hand-picked from about 500 he generated.

He wrote the work in JavaScript and WebGL shaders with no outside libraries, and the contract holds all of it and builds each Deck's animation and picture on request. Minting opened on his own site on January 17, 2025. Buyers picked a Deck by number and chose how many PXL to mint with it, up to 500,000. An owner can later mint up to 500,000 more, take PXL out or put more in. Most Decks were minted in the first three days, the last in March.

For Asendorf the pixel is "the lowest possible level of abstraction," and turning it into a token is the point of the work. He calls PXL an art coin, and the deposits and withdrawals a byproduct. Le Random's timeline counts it among the strongest projects of 2025, and Raoul Pal named it his standout artwork of the year for Le Random. It was shown in Complex, his first retrospective, in Bangkok that March, and in PXL at NODE in Palo Alto in 2026. Collectors needed a Deck to mint a Pod of its sequel, PXL POD, one Pod per Deck.

What to look for

The densest Decks

A Deck could mint up to 500,000 PXL, and 500,000 more later, and its owner can deposit any PXL they hold. These five held the most in October 2026, which made their cubes the thickest. The counts are live and change whenever an owner adds or withdraws PXL.

The emptiest Decks

With few points the animation is barely there, as Kevin Buist notes in his essay for the series. These five held the fewest in October 2026, Deck 70 just eight dots in the dark. The counts are live and change whenever an owner adds or withdraws PXL.
