About Kim Asendorf

Kim Asendorf is a German artist who builds his work from single pixels. He holds an MFA from the Kunsthochschule Kassel and his roots are in net art. In 2010 he shared a pixel-sorting algorithm on GitHub, and artists and designers have used the open-source script widely since. For How Many Images Am I Able to Upload Until Flickr Locks My Account? (2011), a bot posted about 20,000 images before Flickr locked the account. With Ole Fach he made the Tumblr project Gezi gelen Limon (2013) and the show Computer's World at Carroll / Fletcher in London. His work has been shown at Transmediale, ZKM Karlsruhe and Kunsthalle Zürich.

He joined the Hic et Nunc community in early 2021, and Monogrid, a set of 256 real-time animations, was his first work made for the blockchain. Since then he has written the code and contracts for pixel animations that run live. SABOTAGE (2022) stages a fight between order and chaos. Cargo came out on Art Blocks Curated in 2023 as 1,000 animated pixel paintings. COLORS OF NOISE, curated by Peggy Schoenegge for Feral File that year, turns generated noise into sound and image. Chrome (2023) is a 128-channel animation made with Leander Herzog. He was one of the first 15 artists in MoMA Postcard and co-directed Metallica's Chasing Light video with Dina Chang.

PXL DEX (2025) makes every pixel a PXL token that its owner can withdraw or deposit. PXL POD (2026) carries the same token into a cylindrical form. The Goethe-Institut in Bangkok gave him his first retrospective, Complex, in 2025. Nguyen Wahed, which represents him, showed Raster und Spektrum in the Zero 10 section of Art Basel Miami Beach that December. NODE in Palo Alto opened his exhibition PXL in July 2026.
