About RΞMNANTS

RΞMNANTS is a set of 250 faces by XCOPY, each broken into blocky, stepped shards of two grainy colors on a black ground, with thin outlines like circuit traces drifting around it. The features barely hold together, and the eyes change from work to work, spirals on some and small rainbows on others. Each work is a two-frame GIF that fizzes in place. The trait names joke about crypto and life online, from eyes called Hopium and Reply Bot to a frequency called FOMO FM.

It was the last monthly airdrop of RarePass Genesis, a year of drops from SuperRare to the holders of 250 passes. XCOPY deployed his own contract on October 31, 2023, minted all 250 works to himself the next day, and they went out to pass holders on November 3. Holders paid nothing per work, since the pass was the ticket. The images are 4,096-pixel GIFs stored on Arweave, and like his other solo work they are in the public domain under CC0.

He set it against Grifters, whose layer names Vision and Noise come back here. The difference, he told nft now, is that "the 'outputs' are not random. They're choices I made." He picked each output, then "degenerated" the works past that point, and says the method let him take risks a template would not allow. The first token, REMNANT #1, went to the holder of RarePass #1 under the program's rule. It is the only one with crosses for eyes and the only one in the Bubblegum 86 colorway.

What to look for

Colorway

The two colors of the face. Dark Days, hot pink on slate blue, and Blue Punch together cover nearly two thirds of the set. Lizard Boy, teal and orange, is on seven, and Bubblegum 86 only on REMNANT #1.

Vision

10 of 17 values

The eyes, a layer name carried over from Grifters. Revealio draws spirals, and X, two crosses, appears once.

Noise

10 of 17 values

The other layer that comes from Grifters, where it names the mouth. Brute Farce, on four works, is the rarest.

Notable pieces

Outputs with an auction, museum or record-sale story.
