About William Mapan

William Mapan is a French artist based in Paris who writes generative algorithms and also paints. He trained at Gobelins, the Paris school of image and animation, where he teaches creative coding, and spent about ten years as a creative developer in advertising before turning to his own work full time. His code borrows the look of physical media such as crayon, felt-tip pen, coloured pencil and hand-mixed pigment. "At the end of the day, the code is my brushstrokes," he told Le Random in 2023.

He began minting on Hic et Nunc in 2021 and released Dragons on fxhash that year. Anticyclone, 800 works inspired by clouds and the sky, followed on Art Blocks Curated in April 2022 and minted out. Crypto Briefing named it one of the drivers of that summer's generative art rally.

In 2023 he made Distance, a series for LACMA's Remembrance of Things Future initiative with Cactoid Labs. It responds to Paul Klee's 1914 watercolor In the Kairouan Style, Transposed in a Moderate Way in the museum's collection. That year he also released Strands of Solitude, and in October his solo show Intimacy opened in London with two new series: Sketchbook A and Through Your Eyes.

In 2026 he was a finalist in HOFA's Digital Art Awards, presented with Phillips in Hong Kong. That June, Art Blocks showed Paysages Plausibles, his oil paintings and plotter drawings of constructed landscapes, at Zero 10 during Art Basel.
