About Rafaël Rozendaal

Rafaël Rozendaal is a Dutch-Brazilian artist based in New York. He makes websites and sells them as artworks. A buyer receives the domain name and has their name added to the page title and code, on the condition that the site stays public. In 2013 his website ifnoyes.com sold at Phillips in New York. In 2010 he started BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer), an open format that lets anyone stage a projector exhibition, and in 2011 it was the theme of the Internet Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

His screen work also takes physical form. Abstract Browsing (2014), a browser extension, replaces the content of any web page with flat blocks of color placed where the text and images were, and he later had those images woven into large Jacquard tapestries. Into Time is a series of lenticular prints. MoMA, the Whitney Museum, the Centre Pompidou and the Stedelijk Museum hold his work.

Endless Nameless came out on Art Blocks in July 2021 as 1,000 generated works. Half the proceeds went to the nonprofit Rhizome, which called it the largest benefit donation in its twenty-five years. In August 2022 he released Polychrome Music with the musician Danny Wolfers (Legowelt), who wrote a generative music system that plays an endless composition on three channels. His other onchain series include Non Either and Cabinets. In 2023 the Centre Pompidou bought three works from 81 Horizons, and Museum Folkwang in Essen opened Color, Code, Communication, which it called his first monographic NFT exhibition in a European museum.
