This artwork was inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle's short story "A Scandal in Bohemia". This is the first short story (and overall third work) featuring Sherlock Holmes and is famous for being the story that features the character of Irene Adler, who was able to outsmart the great detective.
"A Scandal in Bohemia" was later included in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, a collection of twelve short stories. This was my first introduction to Sherlock Holmes, when I was given this book by my parents as a kid. I was hooked and went on to read the rest of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes short stories and novels.
This illustration was inspired by the following passage: "...but she stood at the top with her superb figure outlined against the lights of the hall, looking back into the street."
