A New Reality

As Alice sat in her cubicle overwhelmed by work, she noticed her boss was offline and took the opportunity to quickly slip into her favourite world through her Black Mirror model VR headset.

“Ahh yes…” the feeling of the cool water and crisp clear air overcame her cerebral cortex and flooded her neurotransmitters with the dopamine hormones she craved. The feeling of gliding on the surface of the wave satisfied her soul to the point of ecstasy.

“This is so good!!” Alice gasped. “Why can’t I just stay here forever?” she asked herself.

“You would become bored and unappreciative, a subconscious voice echoed in her mind.

“Yeah probably,'' lamented Alice. She was aware of the yin and yang of life and the value of challenges and darkness required to keep her whole.

“But this whole work thing seems so pointless, surely I can create a more meaningful life?”

“You are the creator,” the subconscious voice answered.

Just as Alice’s conscious mind started to awaken to this idea and it’s endless possibilities she noticed her boss was back online and was abruptly jolted back to the dull reality of her cubicle. As she started to pretend she was working she tried desperately to hold onto the thoughts she had experienced only to be interrupted by her boss demanding meaningless numbers and data.

For the rest of the day Alice was swamped with work and didn’t get another chance to re-examine the connection she had with her inner voice. However the seed was planted and despite the challenges her mundane reality kept throwing at her she sensed she was on a new path of discovery that might not come to fruition overnight but with commitment and focus shecould begin to create a new reality for herself.
