The Future Is Made of Dreams and Shadows

I began this piece with the intention of creating something entitled "Disappointment", because that's what we were feeling at the time. Deep disappointment, because our plans for the future had been thwarted. I couldn't believe it. It hurt, and I wanted to transform that pain into something visual - a way to deal with it.

As I worked, I was thinking about it all, and realised that disappointment can only exist if we take the risk of expecting something from the future. And the future, I once told her, is just dreams and shadows... If we try reaching out to bend these dreams and shadows to our will (which requires great amounts of emotional energy), we are risking great pain should they not conform to our desires.

I was thinking all this, while working patiently, trying to express it all. But, rather ironically and appropriately, I was disappointed with the results. Nothing was working... I kept at it though, and suddenly, there it was! The piece you see now. Except - What I saw was not disappointment, but something beautiful and unexpected, and I smiled at the lesson, thanking my muse and my own creative drive.
