Albrecht Dührer's 1500 AD self-portrait was born of a daring connaturalization of religious iconography that continues to boldly dominate five centuries onward.
Through Drifting Dührer, a 21st century Muslim artist of East European descent and Eurasian Steppe Nomad roots challenges his audience to imaginatively engage with art, history, anthropology, and religion.
The dynamic audiovisual artist/AI collaboration, featuring guided GAN interpretations and extrapolations of Dührer's countenance drifting past and through arbitrary limitations of race and gender, poses open-ended questions about the sort of persons, societies, and worlds that could have given rise to the innumerable Dührer doppelgängers depicted within the work's gentle flow.
Music adapted from Kimiko Ishizaka's CC0 licensed performance of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations Aria.
