Soul Sister

This is one of my favourite images in my new series. With all images in this new style, I’ve worked over a base image to create a new and different image altogether. I look for lines that occur naturally as contours and build off of them with coloured hand drawn lines and shading to enhance the mood and feeling. Using a colour palette that works well with the tones of the base image, I look to find the beauty in the underlying image and enhance it into a new image.

Soul Sister is meant to subtly spark emotion and contemplation in the viewer. Bold colors signal hope while the touches of deep blue ignite feelings of sadness. The piece contains a number of “Easter eggs” that can only be found after close inspection, so there is more going on than meets the eye at first glance. Each symbol is a message from me to the viewer, but their overall meaning is up for interpretation.
