One Love: Objects of Desire St Valentine's Edition

Love! Arguably the force behind humanity's whole existence, ups and downs, the force behind war and piece. Thousands of poems and novels have been written on love starting all the way from Egyptian papyruses and inscriptions in the Pharaohs’ tombs.

Most recently however, another trend has been emerging, which has been the relentless commercialisation of love into a billions dollars industry, that has only continued to swiftly grow. For each St Valentine’s day, the whole world is out on a spending spree like never before. Lines queuing outside Tiffany’s or Cartier, champagne and roses becoming all of a sudden a highly prized commodity in restricted supply. The desire to show off to our loves ones our dedication to them has become a commercial spectacle of magnificent proportions.

With this piece, Mihov questions our views and consumerist sides to love. Do we love our partners because of their characters, or ability to showers us in diamonds and roses. Should the two be connected? Are diamonds really a girl’s best friend and can love be forever too?
