$-One of the jobs when working as a Meteorologist in Antarctica is to provide weather data and forecasts on the journey to and from the continent. It gives you a bullet proof reason to be up on the ship's bridge in any sort of weather, and it also puts you first in line for berg spotting duty.
Berg spotting is a really important job. Maybe it was something about a big ship hitting an iceberg and sinking (yes, I'm referencing the titanic), but while we're in berg territory in the southern ocean, it's all hands on deck. Expeditioners take turns on a roster to look out, document and advise crew of any icebergs spotted. It's not a bad way to pass the time.
They say that on average only 1/10th of an iceberg is visible above water. This particular berg was about four times the length of our ship (which at 95 meters is nothing to be sneezed at). The majesty of these enormous chunks of what was formerly attached to the Antarctic continent is difficult to put into words. Each one is so different. When they flip over, they document thousands of years of the evolution of the planet. So yeah. Icebergs are pretty cool.
