Hanging Lake, a National Natural Landmark, was formed by a geologic fault which caused the lake bed to drop away from the valley floor above. Water flows into the lake over Bridal Veil Falls. The lake edge is built up from dissolved carbonates which are deposited on the shore as the water flows over.
Much of the trail was closed after a flash flood decimated Glenwood Canyon in August of 2021. I was able to hike up to see the lake on the first day it reopened in June of 2022. Reservations are required ahead of time to see it and during busy seasons it can be tough to get one so book in advance if you plan to visit!
The hike up to the lake was very steep, ascending about 1,000 feet of elevation or so over only 1.5 miles of trail, but it was worth it. This lake is one of natures wonders that has been preserved.
