Rauer's Perspective

I spoke a lot about scale when I got home from Antarctica. I found it difficult to describe the size of things, and the vastness of scale. I was really lucky to be able to traverse hundreds of kilometers to the Rauer Islands with a few fellow expeditioner's, not long after the sun had returned to the continent after its extended absence during winter. We spent many long hours exploring the area in front of Browns Glacier (pictured) where the glacier meets the land and sea ice. I love this perspective- the tiny frames of Brad and Craig (both big burly men) admiring the small end of the glacier.

This photo was taken mid afternoon, as cirrostratus cloud streamed off the plateau, lit by the sun as it sat low in the sky. In weeks post winter solstice, after the sun had finally returned to the continent after weeks of absence- clear days were often met by soft "golden hour" light from mid afternoon until the sun dipped back below the horizon- painting everything in pastels. It was bliss!
