Luminopterix Aurelia, named from Latin 'lumen' (light) and 'aurelia' (golden), is a bioluminescent lepidopteran with radiant golden-yellow wings patterned with black and subtle blue iridescence. It has a wingspan up to 15 cm, delicate yet robust morphology with scalloped margins, and a body emitting concentrated orange bioluminescence around the thorax and abdomen within 470-530 nm, affiliating it with the 'Fluorescentum Mystica' cluster. Endemic to tropical rainforest canopies, it thrives at 15-25°C, exhibiting rhythmic gliding flight for energy-efficient navigation in low light. Weighing 0–5 g, it is adapted for dense foliage. L. Aurelia belongs to a group of 20 bioluminescent Lepidoptera species and is currently near threatened, underscoring conservation needs.
The Dataland Founding Digital Collection, Biome Lumina, is the first series of 1,000 unique living paintings on blockchain by Refik Anadol Studio for Dataland. Biome Lumina represents a bold new frontier in generative art. As the artwork emerges and transforms, its structure and luminescence is directly shaped by the incoming environmental data from rainforests around the globe. Collectors will be able to engage in dynamic conversations with the artwork through a generative AI interface trained on environmental knowledge and datasets. Each piece is accompanied by AI soundscapes based on a precise network of sensors monitoring atmospheric dynamics and ground conditions. Biome Lumina sets the stage for things to come. It is an invitation to enter an ongoing collaboration between nature, code and collector, exemplifying a world in which technology is not a disconnection from the Earth — but a return to it.
