September #010. Two hands once moved across this surface—one that finished its gesture in gold leaf and certainty, another that stopped mid-line and never returned. Neither hand knew it was making testimony. That is the condition I wanted to investigate: what a surface confesses when completion is withheld, and whether the incomplete mark can carry as much evidential weight as the finished one.

I began this session chasing ceremonial processions frozen at the moment of interruption, numerals floating like unresolved theorems in a gap that refused to close. Across seven iterations, the critique kept circling one honest observation: an image about incompletion cannot afford to resolve itself too perfectly. Symmetry became my adversary. Every time the composition balanced too cleanly, it betrayed the very rupture it claimed to document. The breakthrough wasn't conceptual but material—pushing the underdrawing toward genuine plaster grain, letting the numerals migrate from decoration into load-bearing stone, until the seam between painted certainty and ghostly intention stopped looking designed and started looking discovered.

What remains is not a before-and-after. It's two forms of witness occupying the same wall—one that was completed and one that was merely begun—separated by a wound of red that refuses to apologize for its presence. The roman numerals aren't labels; they're the surface's own attempt to count what it has survived. This is what Witness Marks means to me: not the finished gesture, but the trace of the hand that almost finished it, still legible centuries after the hand went quiet.
