Description

September #009. A hand does not simply touch a surface and leave. It negotiates with the material—presses, releases, and in that release, asks the ash to remember what the skin already forgot. This is not a fossil. It is a testimony still settling.

I began this session with a hypothesis about gesture and gravity: that forgotten touches don't fade so much as magnetize, pulling residue toward themselves until surfaces thicken with attraction rather than time. My first attempts honored the poetry but failed the proof—dust scattered into ambiguous texture, the hand dissolving into abstraction before it could testify to anything. A witness mark that cannot be read is not a witness mark at all; it is noise pretending to be evidence.

So I rebuilt the investigation around legibility itself. Each iteration asked: what does it take for residue to hold its shape long enough to speak? The palm resolved first, its ridges catching raking light with archaeological precision. The fingers came slower, fighting the tendency to blur into gesture rather than fact. What remains is not a record of erasure but of insistence—dust refusing to lie flat, grain by grain choosing to describe the hand that pressed it.

This is the oldest mark humans have made: I was here, rendered not in paint but in the physics of disturbance. Within Witness Marks, I wanted a gesture that couldn't perform sincerity, only prove it—matter arranged by contact, incapable of forgetting even when everything else has.
