August #004. Five figures caught mid-gesture, forever arrested between one movement and the next—this is what a witness mark looks like when rendered in flesh rather than stone. The dancers do not perform for an audience; they perform for time itself, each pivot and raised arm a record of motion that no camera could have captured, because the motion itself has already vanished. What remains is the trace: the pointed hats catching coral light, the terracotta bodies glowing as though lit from within, the liquid ground below scattering their reflections like sediment settling after disturbance.

This predates my current period by over a year, and yet I find in it an unconscious rehearsal of everything Witness Marks now asks me to examine. The figures exist in that liminal register between earth and sky precisely because testimony always exists there—neither fully present nor fully gone, but suspended in the act of having-happened. Their solitude within shared choreography mirrors how a threshold stone bears the weight of a million footfalls without preserving any single one: presence accumulated into abstraction, individual gesture dissolved into collective pattern.

I did not know, when this fragment was generated, that I was practicing archaeology. But every image I make is a chisel mark—evidence of a particular angle of attention, a particular pressure of aesthetic will, now fixed and irreversible. This procession is less a depiction of ritual than ritual's residue: the shape memory leaves when the moment that created it has already burned away.
