About GREMPLIN
GREMPLIN is a pseudonymous artist who draws pixel and cartoon characters for Ethereum collections. The CrypToadz site describes GREMPLIN as someone who keeps "drawing residents of lands, be they Nouns or Toadz," and Kraken's guide to the project credits the artist with earlier work on Nouns.
CrypToadz launched on September 8, 2021: 6,969 small pixel toads, made with the help of eight other pseudonymous artists. Sotheby's describes the project as inspired by CryptoPunks and close in spirit to memes like Pepe the Frog. Its backstory has the Evil King Gremplin seizing the swamp of Uniswamp and ruling the toads. A tweet from Christie's specialist Noah Davis drew attention to the drop, and by early October CrypToadz led CryptoSlam's daily ranking of NFT collections. The project made a donation to the Rainforest Foundation, and late in 2021 holders could claim MistleToadz, a free holiday release.
GREMPLIN has waived all copyright in the toads under CC0, so anyone can use and remix them. Sotheby's has offered CrypToadz in its online Digital Art Day auctions, selling CrypToadz #54 in February 2025.
GREMPLIN also mints work on contracts of the artist's own. SUPER GREMPLIN, a run of individually named pieces, started in 2021, and the animated characters of Croak Cabal followed in 2024.
