## Description

This piece is a glitch of Artemisia Gentileschi’s “Portrait as the Allegory of Painting” (1639) by

In the “Iconologia” of Cesare Ripa (in its third edition at the time of Gentileschi’s self portrait), Painting is described as “a beautiful woman, with full black hair, dishevelled, and twisted in various ways, with arched eyebrows that show imaginative thought, the mouth covered with a cloth tied behind her ears, with a chain of gold at her throat from which hangs a mask, and has written in front 'imitation'” This description is reflected in the original painting (sans the mask) in which Artemisia Gentileschi shows herself as an allegory of painting, something her male contemporaries could not do. In my glitch of the painting, all the elements of humanity are obscured, but the resulting glitch remains “disheveled and twisted in various ways.” Is it an imitation?
