## Description

"The Good Dinosaur" (full title "The Physical Impossibility of Living in the Mind of Someone Dead: The Good Dinosaur") is one of several attempts to depict the nature of humanity as a whole. All of my work is about our species on a macro-level but once a year or so, I attempt to say everything there is to say about us in one go (which is impossible btw).

In "The Good Dinosaur" I’m looking at our species from the standpoint of our inevitable extinction. It is very likely that our own creations will result in that extinction. Too often we blame specific creations. The combustion engine, capitalism and plastics take a lot of heat, for example. But extinction has been the trajectory of our species since the beginning. Agriculture, for example, is the innovation that allowed diversity of lifestyle and profession. That diversity leads to civilization. When civilization grows, we begin to see the problems humans cause. Mass extinctions have occurred on any continent in which human beings arrived.

I posit, without judgment, it is our basic nature that leads to these ecological disasters. We cannot be the only species that exists outside of its purpose. Our role in the greater ecosystem has invariably been to alter and eventually destroy it. We can pretend our purpose (as a species) is anything else but the reality of our history in relation to nature tells us otherwise.

So when it’s over what do we leave behind: all of our creations; the very creations that lead to our demise. And I don't discriminate. Donald Duck holds equal weight in my narrative to a nuclear bomb.

Dinosaurs left their fossils. We leave a complex legacy in our wake. It is with a sense of humor and some measure of compassion that I observe that legacy in "The Good Dinosaur."
