## Description

Galatea is the name given to the statue carved in ivory by Pygmalion of Cyprus, so perfect that the creator fell in love. The king did not like women because he considered them fussy and imperfect, and came to the conclusion that he did not want to marry any, living without any female company. But as time passed, the king felt lonely and began to carve a very beautiful ivory statue with perfect features. He dedicated himself with great care to making this work and in this way he spent days and nights locked up in his workshop giving shape to this woman. He sculpted each of the features and shapes with great detail and care. When he finished his work, the result was a very beautiful maiden whom he adorned with beautiful jewels.

Every night Pygmalion visited his work, imagining what that woman would be like if she lived, if she were made of flesh and bone instead of ivory.

And that's how Pygmalion fell in love and became obsessed with that woman, and named her Galatea, which means as white as ivory.
