## Description

I captured this image during the Pushkar Camel Festival on one of my nine visits over the past three decades to this iconic annual celebration, which is held in the state of Rajasthan, India, during the full moon of November each year. There were more than twenty thousand camels for sale. What an amazing scene. But my main focus that day was this little boy who had painted himself blue in reverence to the Hindu god, Lord Shiva, who is always rendered blue.

India is known for its cluttered chaotic environments. Knowing that the background of a photo is just as important as the subject, I offered the kid twice the going rate in Indian Rupees for his modeling services if he’d come with me a block down the road where I ultimately posed him in front of a tranquil, blue-painted Hindu Brahmin temple wall. Viola. Magic.

His eyes penetrated my soul. And yours.
