## About

Michael Kozlowski, who works as mpkoz, is an American media artist and software developer based in Seattle. He grew up in Montana, went to film school at the University of Southern California, where a creative coding elective led him to a minor in computer science, then spent years building mixed reality software, including on Microsoft's HoloLens team. A few sales of his digital art in 2021 let him quit and make art full time.

Most of what he makes starts as an algorithm he codes by hand, and he is drawn to graphics that render in real time, mixed reality and interactive work. [*Chimera*](https://www.gondi.xyz/collections/chimera-by-mpkoz.md) came out on Art Blocks Curated on 10 January 2022: 987 still lifes of flowers, fruit, books and skulls, each drawn live by its code in strokes that imitate oil, charcoal, watercolor and textile. He dedicated it to his mother, and part of its proceeds went to cancer research.

[*Tectonics*](https://www.gondi.xyz/collections/tectonics.md), a 90-piece study of recursion that drifts toward cubism, followed in September 2022, and *Parnassus* gave part of its proceeds that year to aid for Ukraine. In 2023 *Metropolis* opened the Art Blocks and Bright Moments partnership with 940 works, whose owners could claim a second, matching piece in person in one of five Bright Moments cities. In April 2024 he wrote a seven kilobyte study of signed distance fields for the Bright Moments Finale in Venice.

*Empath* (2024) is a set of three unique mechanical sculptures, each paired with a digital blueprint minted as an NFT. Drawing on his family's background in horology, each holds more than 2,000 moving parts driven only by gravity and stays still until a viewer touches it. The collector Kanbas acquired *Empath* and in February 2025 released a film with him about his turn to physical work.
